History & Context
Wuhan's industrial history dates to the late Qing dynasty's Self-Strengthening Movement. The modern tech boom began with the establishment of the Donghu (East Lake) High-Tech Zone in 1988, which became known as "Optics Valley" due to its concentration of fiber optics companies led by Fiberhome Technologies. The city leveraged its 89 universities (the most in China) to build deep talent pipelines. YMTC's flash memory fab, despite US sanctions pressure, represents China's most ambitious memory chip effort.
