History & Context
Founded as a Special Economic Zone in 1980, Shenzhen transformed from a fishing village of 30,000 to a megacity of 17+ million in just four decades. Starting with low-end electronics assembly in the 1980s, it climbed the value chain through telecommunications equipment (Huawei, ZTE) in the 1990s, consumer electronics and internet platforms (Tencent) in the 2000s, and now leads in electric vehicles (BYD), drones (DJI), and humanoid robotics (UBTECH). The city's unique ecosystem combines rapid prototyping capabilities in Huaqiangbei, world-class R&D labs, and a deep talent pool from nearby universities.
