History & Context
Dalian emerged as China's leading software outsourcing city in the early 2000s, leveraging geographic proximity and cultural ties to Japan. The Dalian Software Park became one of China's largest, hosting thousands of IT companies. In parallel, the city maintained a strong precision manufacturing base dating to its heavy industry roots, producing bearings, machine tools, and marine diesel engines. Intel's Fab 68, opened in 2010, brought advanced chip manufacturing to the city. Dalian is now pivoting toward AI, robotics, and precision instruments as it seeks to revitalize the broader Dongbei (Northeast) industrial region.
