History & Context
Chengdu's modern industrial identity is rooted in Mao-era "Third Front" defense industrialization, when factories were relocated deep inland for strategic protection. This legacy made Chengdu a center for aerospace and defense manufacturing. Chengdu Aircraft Corporation, which builds the J-20 stealth fighter and J-10, is the crown jewel. In the 2010s, the city diversified into civilian tech, attracting Intel's packaging operations and building a substantial gaming and AI ecosystem. The "Go West" development strategy has channeled significant central government investment.
